Armenia - Travel Tips

Travel Essentials View

1

Essential Travel Documents & Entry (UK Passports)

Passport Validity

  • Your British passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Armenia. There’s no specific extra “six-month beyond arrival” rule, but airlines and border officials may still check your documents carefully before departure.

Visa & Entry Rules

  • Visa-free travel: British citizens do not need a visa to enter Armenia for tourism or business visits. You can stay up to 180 days in a calendar year without a visa.

  • On arrival, you’ll normally receive a passport entry stamp confirming your permission to stay.

  • If you plan to stay longer than 180 days, contact the Armenian Migration and Citizenship Service to extend your stay or explore residency options.

Travel & Onward Plans

  • Although this is not always enforced, it’s a good idea to have proof of onward or return travel and details of your accommodation, as immigration officers may ask for them.

Useful Tips

  • Currency: Armenian dram (AMD) is the local currency — have some cash handy, especially outside major towns.

  • Language: Armenian is the main language; Russian is widely understood.

  • Local customs: Armenians are warm and welcoming; learn a few phrases and be respectful when visiting sacred Christian sites.

Safety, Insurance, and FCDO Advice

Safety & Local Laws

  • Security: Armenia is generally safe, but keep aware of your surroundings. Follow local guidance and avoid any restricted border areas or protests.

  • Crime: Petty theft can occur, especially in cities. Use normal travel precautions (secure valuables, watch luggage in crowds).

  • Photography: Don’t take photos of military sites, border installations or sensitive infrastructure — this is illegal and officers may question you.

  • Drugs: Possessing or using illegal drugs is a serious offence with severe penalties.

Health & Insurance

  • Travel insurance is strongly recommended; medical facilities vary in quality and English may not be widely spoken outside major cities.

  • Check routine vaccinations and consider recommended travel vaccines before departure.

Spiritual & Physical Preparation

Modest Attire (Church & Monastery Visits):
Armenia is a deeply Christian country, and modest dress is expected when visiting churches and monasteries. Both men and women should ensure shoulders and knees are covered. Women are encouraged (though not always strictly required) to carry a light scarf for head covering in some churches, particularly older or rural monasteries. Modest, respectful clothing is appreciated and helps avoid unwanted attention.

Footwear (Ancient & Uneven Terrain):
Many of Armenia’s most important Christian sites are ancient monasteries set on hillsides or rocky ground. Expect uneven stone paths, steps, gravel, and cobblestones. Comfortable, well-broken-in walking shoes or trainers with good grip are essential. Stylish shoes are best left at home — practicality matters more here.

Weather & Layers:
Even outside peak summer, Armenia can experience strong sun during the day and cool temperatures in the evenings, especially in mountainous areas. We recommend layered clothing so you can adjust comfortably throughout the day.

Hydration:
Armenia’s climate can be dry, particularly in spring and autumn. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink regularly. Bottled water is widely available and inexpensive, and staying hydrated is especially important during site visits involving walking or elevation.

Respectful Behaviour at Holy Sites:
Armenian churches are active places of worship. Please keep voices low, avoid flash photography, and follow local guidance if a service is taking place. Armenians are proud of their Christian heritage and deeply appreciate respectful visitors.
